SunShare Community Solar Garden at Venetucci Farm

RGS Energy is bringing utility-scale solar power to Colorado Springs in the form of the city’s first solar farm. An agreement to build the farm was set up between SunShare, the region’s first community solar company, and Colorado Springs Utilities, with RGS Energy contracted to do the installation. This arrangement allows Colorado Springs residents who would like to use and save money with solar power to do so by leasing panels from the farm instead of having them installed at home.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 29, 2011 where Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper helped place the first of the 2,508 solar panels that will make up the array. Installation was completed and grid-tied in December 2011.

The 2,508-module array was completed in two phases – the first 300 kW was installed in early December, with the remaining 275 kW going online shortly thereafter. The installation is at Venetucci Farm, a historic farm in Colorado Springs that will receive solar electricity of its own in exchange for providing the land.
